Clean a URL while preserving the page's behavior
A cleaner-looking URL may open a different page. Decide why you are sharing it and keep the parameters its behavior requires.

1. Start with tracking-only removal
The default mode removes names starting with utm_ and recognized tracking identifiers. Do not select removal of every query parameter just because a URL looks messy. Test the result; a recognized tracking name does not guarantee that every site can safely omit it.
2. Compare two modes on one URL
Compare it yourself · Illustrative example
https://example.com/product?id=42&utm_source=chat#details
| Choice | Illustrative result | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking only | https://example.com/product?id=42#details | Product 42 still opens |
| All queries | https://example.com/product#details | The product identifier is gone |
| Also remove the fragment | https://example.com/product?id=42 | The details jump may be lost |
3. URLs that need extra care
Changing even one field can invalidate a signed URL. Keep the original and test the cleaned result in a new window. Cleaning a personal download or payment URL does not make it suitable for public sharing.
- Search terms, page numbers and filters
- Signatures and expiry parameters in download or payment URLs
- Fragment routes and tab selectors used by an app
- UTM labels still needed for campaign measurement
4. Clean, verify, then shorten or make a QR
URL Cleaner processes the text in your browser and does not visit the destination. You must check the resulting page. Only then pass the URL to shortening or QR creation; for a new campaign, add fresh UTM labels to the cleaned base URL.
