URLTO GUIDE

What to check when a short link does not open

Before replacing a shared link, identify where the journey stops. An unknown short URL, a changed operating status and a failed destination need different responses.

1. Inspect the actual published URL

Copy the address from the message or post and compare it with the generated short URL. Look for punctuation appended to the address or a code truncated across lines. Distinguish the destination, public short URL and private control URL; never fix a public post by adding a private access key.

2. Identify which page reports the problem

3. Review link status and the original page

For an unavailable-link notice, review activation and expiry settings first. The notice alone does not identify one cause. Do not assume a deleted or restricted link can simply be reactivated. Before changing its destination, verify that the replacement page opens for visitors.

Shortening a page that only opens for your signed-in account does not grant access to others. Confirm that a destination is suitable for public sharing, especially for personal downloads or temporary session URLs. Redirect Checker cannot reproduce every authenticated or app-only journey.

4. Retest existing posts and QR codes

After a change, test the link in the message already sent and the QR already printed. A short-link QR must be checked against that same short URL's current destination. A code containing the original destination is not changed by editing a separate short link.

  • Record the error text, time and public short URL
  • Redact private keys and personal information from support material
  • Investigate one cause at a time before generating replacements

Frequently asked questions

Will a replacement short link fix it?

A replacement can have the same problem if the destination requires permission or is failing. Check the original page and the current link's status first.

Can I publish a statistics or management URL?

Publish the public short URL. Statistics and management URLs include private access keys and should stay out of posts and QR codes.
